The biennial event, designed to help smallholders make the most of their land, is the highlight of NRM North’s Small Farm Living program and is delivered in partnership with Lilydale Landcare.

NRM North’s Biodiversity Coordinator, Lauren Bird, says this year’s event is expected to be the largest to date, with presentations and demonstrators focused on sharing sustainable land management practices.

“Keynote speakers Chris Wisbey and Sally Dakis will be familiar voices for ABC listeners, and poo-ologist Dr Graeme Stevenson will share a wealth of information about the importance of earthworms in agriculture”, she said.

“We know attendees put what they learn into practice and make really positive changes on their farms. We aim to see landholders leave the event with new ideas and a broader understanding of sustainable land management”.

The Small Farm Living Field Day attracted nearly 400 people in 2017 and is expected to attract over 500 people next weekend. This year’s event focuses on The Nature of Your Farm, where attendees will be able to learn more about what provides balance in their ecosystems including soil health, farm biosecurity, weed management, livestock health and much more.

Nigel Russell, President of Lilydale Landcare, has seen the benefits of the event first hand.

“The Field Day challenges the community to rethink what’s possible on their farm and gives them the confidence to try new ideas. The community is certainly more engaged, and we’ve seen an increase of Landcare memberships in our area as a result”, Mr Russell said.

Stallholders will showcase resources for small-acre farming and a range of presenters and demonstrations will run throughout the day. Children will be entertained with face painting, worm farms and a petting zoo, plus drinks and a BBQ will also be available.

The Small Farm Living Field Day is a free event, held at “Sonoma Lodge”, 231 Golconda Road, Lilydale from 10:00 am to 3:30 pm on Sunday 6th October 2019.
